In Ukraine, it is estimated that 100,000 persons have been trafficked since 1991, including men, women, and children. The Counter Trafficking in Persons (TIP) initiative is a part of a broader U.S. Government effort to address the crime of trade in human beings. Theinitiative aims to reduce TIP in Ukraine primary women and children between 12 and 25 years old by increasing awareness of the issue among governmental and community leaders, service providers and the general public; informing and motivating risk groups about ways to protect themselves; assisting victims; and ensuring their reintegration into society.
Over 100,000 children in Ukraine live outside of family care. While the majority of these children are in state institutions, including orphanages, boarding schools and shelters, many struggle to survive on the streets . The Families for Children Program (FCP) works to develop sustainable and replicable family care models of service for children, including HIV-affected, who otherwise would be institutionalized or on the street. The models are being developed in seven pilot sites in five oblasts – Cherkasy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Donetsk and Odesa. FCP’s focus is on developing a continuum of family-based care services that provide effective alternatives to long-term institutionalization or life on the streets for children, including those who are affected by HIV. USAID collaborates with national and local governmental authorities and child welfare NGOs in five Ukrainian oblasts to build internationally recognized child welfare services for orphans, homeless and HIV-affected children that can then be replicated countrywide.
The Community Connections Program offers practical training opportunities and internships in the United States for entrepreneurs, local government officials, non-governmental organization leaders, education administrators, as well as medical, business support, and environmental professionals from Ukraine. Community Connections combines seminars, workshops, site visits and meetings with American professionals with hands-on practical internships. Participants live with American host families while in the U.S. The Community Connections Program has two components: Community Connections Business Program and Community Connections Professional Program.
