Current USAID/Ukraine GDA Projects:

BIBLIOMIST - Ukraine Global Libraries Program

Bibliomist, a GDA with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is working together with national and local governments across Ukraine to help libraries better serve their communities through training and technology. The four-year program will equip more than 1,000 public libraries in Ukraine with access to computers and the Internet. It will also train librarians how to introduce innovative services and strengthen the capacity of the Ukrainian Library Association (ULA), so it can continue to support and advocate for modern libraries in Ukraine.

In support of the goals of the program, Microsoft Corp., a partner of the foundation’s Global Libraries initiative, will donate an estimated $4.4 million in software to Ukraine’s public libraries. Shared access to computing is a priority for Microsoft Ukraine through its Unlimited Potential program, which donates software to non-profits and sponsors e-skills trainings throughout Ukraine.

Improving Access to Safe Water in Selected Health Facilities in Crimea

The project seeks to improve the supply and quality of water in a number of healthcare facilities in Crimea and ensure access to safe and clean potable water for vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly. Improving water quality, in turn, will result in reduction of waterborne infections and diseases in the population of Crimea. The project will also help to increase awareness of water safety, sanitation and safe hygiene practices through education and public information efforts.

Partnership for Cleaner Energy in Ukraine Project

The goal of the three-year Partnerships for Cleaner Energy in Ukraine project is to promote energy saving and CO2 reduction in Ukraine. The project will build the capacities of local government and business to design, evaluate, implement, and measure community-driven energy efficiency and CO2 emissions reduction strategies and projects. The activity will be initially implemented in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast through a GDA approach to establish sustainable partnerships between local government and businesses and equip them with knowledge and skills to identify and implement joint energy saving and CO2 reduction initiatives. From this experience, a local public-private partnership model will be developed, tested and disseminated for replication in other regions of Ukraine.

Ukrainian Standardized External Testing Initiative Legacy Alliance (USETI Legacy Alliance)

The introduction of standardized testing for higher education admissions in 2006 has led to significant decreases in perceived and actual experiences of corruption in the area of higher education admissions.

USETI builds on previous assistance from the U.S. State Department (2006) and Millennium Challenge Corporation to develop a sustainable local organization capable of independently and transparently developing and implementing secure tests that meet international standards; strengthening the legislative basis for testing and higher education admission; and solidifying public support for testing.
